On 6 July we launched our Smokefree UK campaign. This calls on the UK government to introduce measures that:
Stop the start
by putting measures in place to
prevent young people from starting to smoke
, including consulting for a raise in the age of sale of tobacco
Start the stop
by funding public health campaigns and
stop smoking services to help people stop smoking
Funding cuts over the years have led to a decrease in the funding available to Local Authorities and have threatened the viability of stop smoking services. By pledging to be a Cancer Research UK Smokefree councillor you can help amplify our voices to the UK Government to ensure adequate funding is available to help people stop smoking.
Your action can make a difference. Sign up today and pledge to become a Cancer Research UK Smokefree councillor.
Here are some of the pledges you can take:
Support Cancer Research UK’s call for a Smokefree Fund: this would make the tobacco industry foot the bill to fund public health campaigns and stop smoking services to help people quit – without letting them influence how funds are spent.
Work with your MP to encourage the UK Government to introduce measures to prevent young people from starting to smoke, including consulting on raising the age of sale of tobacco.
Support the development and maintenance of a Tobacco Control Alliance in your local authority – Tobacco Control Alliances can help to reduce smoking rates and tackle health inequalities by facilitating collaboration across various health systems according to local needs.
Millions of lives are in the UK Government’s hands. Together, we can all play our part in achieving a smokefree UK.
