Can you imagine
a smokefree generation?
Smoking is the biggest preventable cause of cancer. It causes at least 14 types of cancer, kills 100,000 people in the UK every year and costs the NHS £2.5bn each year. Imagine a future where less than 5% of the population smoke.
The Government’s recently published Tobacco Control Plan outlines their ambition of achieving a ‘smokefree generation’ and recognises that “providing support to help smokers quit is highly cost-effective and local stop smoking services continue to offer smokers the best chance of quitting.”
However, it fails to address how the plan will be funded. Right now, councils are struggling to deliver Stop Smoking Services – and cuts to the Public Health Grant is the number one reason they cite for this. Without adequate and sustainable funding, the Tobacco Control Plan has been set up for failure.
Tobacco kills. Help make sure the government sets out how they will fund the Tobacco Control Plan in England.
2 out of 3 smokers want to quit. Stop Smoking Services are vital to improve the health of the UK, and ensure the sustainability of the NHS. The Government must provide sustainable funding and halt the planned cuts to the Public Health Grant to help more smokers quit – and prevent more people from developing cancer.
Now we need to fund the vital services that support smokers to quit.
