An election in Wales is coming. Join us in calling on all political parties to help save around 5,500 lives between now and 2040.

We’ve made huge progress on cancer in the last 50 years. But, in Wales, there is no long-term plan to tackle cancer, the NHS is struggling to meet rising demand, and inequalities in cancer outcomes remain stark.

People affected by cancer deserve better. That’s why, ahead of the election in 2026, we've launched Longer, better lives: A manifesto for cancer research and care in Wales.

Now, we need all political parties in Wales to prioritise cancer and commit to our calls for change. With urgent action, the next Welsh Government could help save around 5,500 lives over the next 15 years. The time to act is now.

Join us by adding your name today. Together, let’s show all political parties that people in Wales want to see a future with better cancer outcomes for all.

What are Cancer Research UK calling for?

We're asking all political parties in Wales to:

  1. Deliver a long-term cancer strategy: When it comes to beating cancer, well supported, long-term cancer strategies are key to success. That’s why we need a new, long-term national cancer strategy in Wales that drives earlier diagnosis, reduces cancer deaths, and tackles inequalities in cancer outcomes.

  2. Support the NHS: The cancer workforce works hard to deliver cancer services for people right across Wales; however, they continue to work in increasingly challenging conditions. To help deliver services now and in the future, we need the long-term planning and investment to building a stable and skilled cancer workforce – supported and equipped with essential kit and cutting-edge tools and technologies.

  3. Combat lung cancer: Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in Wales. To address this, the Welsh Government must implement the Tobacco & Vapes Bill, strengthen stop smoking services, and roll out a lung cancer screening programme across Wales.

  4. Invest in research: Research and innovation have the power to drive breakthroughs in cancer prevention, detection and treatment. The government can support this by investing in Welsh universities and strengthening innovation to get new tests, medicines, and technologies into the healthcare system more quickly.
